Heron House Bathroom Renovation
Project Snapshot
Location: Providence, RI
Project Type: Full bathroom renovation
Scope: Reconfigured layout with integrated laundry and custom cabinetry
Completed: Interior remodel of a 1930s home bathroom
This full bathroom renovation transformed an outdated apartment bath into a space that works better day to day while still respecting the home’s 1930s character. The project began with a complete gut to the studs, allowing the layout to be reworked to include stacked in-unit laundry without sacrificing comfort or proportion.
The original cast iron tub was removed and replaced with a tiled walk-in shower, creating a cleaner footprint and improving usability. Custom built-in cabinetry was added to maximize storage in the compact space, designed to feel intentional and in keeping with the age of the home.
Finishes were selected with care so the bathroom would feel original rather than newly inserted. Beadboard detailing and classic mosaic floor tile reference the home’s early 20th-century architecture while meeting the durability expectations of a modern renovation.
This project was completed in my own Providence home, which allowed for a hands-on approach from start to finish. In addition to the full design and documentation, I managed the project directly and completed much of the drywall, painting, and finish carpentry myself.
Working through the construction personally reinforced something I already believe strongly: good design is informed by how things are actually built. That experience translates into clearer drawings, more practical details, and fewer surprises during construction.
